Doodles, and Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

-
This weekend has been the complete relaxation. I deserved it. It began on Friday. I was visiting my Sister and Smallone.
Smallone´s father painted her playroom. She is a keen artist and her masterpieces were all over the walls there. She helped with the painting (had a small paintbrush and at the end was covered with the paint more than the wall) and had a great fun.
Since then Smallone knows she can draw only on the sheet of paper and only while sitting by the table. So she does. I wonder what time it will take to make her strawberry playroom walls full of her doodles again. Her mother gives it two, maximal three weeks. I bet she is right.

I was browsing in the bookshop on Saturday morning. I was looking for the latest book of Discworld by Terry Pratchett (they´ve ordered it for me), but I found Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer. How could I resist? Of course, I had to buy it. It is already the fifth book of Artemis Fowl´s adventures. And I love it. As the previous ones.

Artemis Fowl is an extremely smart, cynical human individual. He possesses a dry, sarcastic sense of humor and a ruthless, almost psychopathic nature.
In the first book he is only twelve years old, and because his father, the crime lord Artemis Fowl I., is missing (and his mother is quite unstable thanks to this fact), Artemis has to take the control over the family business.
So the first book follows the adventure of this criminal mastermind, as he kidnaps a fairy for a large ransom of gold.
-
I must say I love these series. It is so funny and clever and witty. And Artemis is a perfect villain-hero turning to hero-villain during the series.
It is some kind of opposite to Harry Potter, who is too positive to me. On the other hand, Artemis is very wry and is like a small James Bond. As Eoin Colfer said, these books are like "Die Hard with fairies,". And they are.
-
The author of Artemis Fowl´s adventures is Eoin Colfer as I´ve mentioned before. He´s written more than just Artemis Fowl series. My favourite book by him (other than Artemis Fowl) is called The Wish List.
If you are interested in what this book is about, I was posting here the contents of the chapters as I was reading it to my small students. So write the words Wish List in the left corner, press find in the blog (or what words have you there), and you´ll see what will appear:-)

To learn more about the plots (but beware the spoilers!) and characters of Artemis Fowl series, go to this wiki site. There is everything, of course:-)

And to find out more about the great Eoin Colfer, you can browse his official site.

I've heard of Artemis Fowl and now that I've read your review I'm going to have to try him out. Lately I've been listening to books on tape so I'll see if the library has some.
I think you mentioned that you were reading "The Historian" and I just finished listening to that and really enjoyed it;

Also, my son loves Terry Pratchett and was very upset to learn about Pratchett's rare form of Alzheimer's. From what I've read he's handling it really well, still writing.

I hope you won´t regret reading (or listening to) Artemis Fowl:-)
I like listening to Neil Gaiman books. Because he is one of my favourite writers and because he tells his novels, poems, and stories by himself. So they sound as they were mentioned to sound:-)

Yes, Terry Pratchett´s ilness was very upsetting and sad news. I am reading his books for almost 11 years, I grew up with them, and I hope there are many of them still ahead.

Hello! Did you know that Eoin Colfer is also going to do a sequel to Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Series? Just thought you might want to know. I just found your blog and it is very interesting and exciting! Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are two of my favorite authors, as well! I have read the first 2 Artemis Fowl books, but that is as far as I have gotten with them. Have you read anything by Elizabeth Hayden? Have you heard of the band Gogol Bordello? From reading your favorite music, and because you are in Czech, I think that you would like them--I saw them live last year, and it was wonderful! Anywho, I am looking forward to reading more of your posts--Hope you had a wonderful Halloween!

Welcome here Celticmartigirl!
Yes, I know about the sequel to Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Series. Neil Gaiman mentioned it somewhere in his blog. By the way, there are usually lots of interesting information. I am a big fan of his writing, you know:-)

I haven´t read anything by Elizabeth Hayden yet. I must admit I have never heard about her so far (ashamed of it...), so thank you for mentioning her. I will have to check her books out.

I like Gogol Bordello. I bet that they must be gorgeous seen alive:-)

Hi people,

What online fanzines do you read and would recommend?

For all you ska folks out there I recommend The Enough Fanzine. It is one of the first hardcore zines on the web.

They have throusands of interviews from the most independent bands all over the world. Check them out online: Enough Fanzine. Best of it all, they are 100% non-profit and just helping the scene!

Looking forward to your recommendations.

Cheers!
